Sand was kicked into the air as shiny black hooves galloped across the beach. A chestnut pelt gleamed brightly as the mare moved, her muscles rippling smoothly under her beautiful coat as she galloped. Black mane slapped her neck, the mare loving the pain. Black stockings reached forward, then tucked back. Her gallop slowed drastically to a loose trot.
The mare's name? Bella. Lady of the Darks, she was. Her emotions ran deep like an ocean, and she was never afraid to show them. The emotion that she couldn't control the most was her anger. Bella was quick to become angry or frustrated. Though in front of her herd she tried to stay calm and cool tempered. Her gaze lay upon the ocean, turning a blood red as the sun slipped behind the horizon.
Bella loved the colour of the ocean at sunset. It was so beautiful. So...beautiful. Her trot soon became a walk, her hindquarters shifting loosely with her steps. The mare stopped in front of the ocean, staring upon the crimson water. She took one step into the spray, then another. Salt sprayed her dished face and broad chest, but she didn't mind the sting. Infact, she loved it.
Love...that was one thing that hadn't been uncommon in her life lately.

A soft, kind nicker. Hoofbeats, slowly but deliberately moving along the sand, their sound muffled by the wet ground.
Lacrymosa nickered again as he approached Bella, slowing to a walk when he was just a few feet away. With a daintiness not expected in the Dark brute, he carefully stepped into the water, snorting gently as the cold sea touched his hooves.
"Hello, Lady," he said, stopping when he stood by her side and nudging her gently. "Anything on your mind?"
Twin black ears, perched atop his head, swiveled 'round to catch the sounds. One, the closest one to Bella, stayed pointed in her direction. The other went straight out to sea, listening to the sounds of the water.
Finally, he turned to look at her; Bella, Lady of the Dark. Where others, namely those emotionless, cold-hearted Lights, may find too many emotions to be a bad thing, Lacrymosa loved it. He moved slightly to the side, so that they were standing closer, hoping she wouldn't mind that. He continued to watch her, doing nothing to hide his joy at the present situation.

"Only a few things," the gentle mare replied, her voice soft like tinkling bells. Bella's gaze stayed upon the crimson waters, thoughts swimming through her head like creatures through the sea. More spray was kicked up, and the mare breathed deeply the scents of salt and Lacramosa. Mixed together, the two scents were wonderful. Bella snorted to rid her nostriles of salt, then turned her gaze to Lacramosa; Lord of The Dark.
An angry though of the Lights raced through her head, and she fought to keep her smile. The mare pressed a dark coloured muzzle against her Lord's cheek bone, letting a sigh escape her lips. If only there wasn't a war. Peace. But the Lights...so heartless and cold. Never showing emotion.
How could a horse live that type of life? Emotions were a part of a horse's personality. That was how a herd communicated and kept peace amongst themselves. Well...that shouldn't be her problem at the moment. Right now she just wanted to relax with her Lord in the soft sand, gazing at the surface of the flamed ocean.

"The war?" Oh, he hated to say it. How much he hated to say it! Yet said it must be, though it made the ever-present anger and hatred flare up briefly, only to be extinguished as his Lady pressed her muzzle to his cheek.
He returned the gesture, stepping closer still to her, until his shoulder touched hers. It was amazing, really, how much she loved to be standing next to her. Even that simple act made his thoughts of the war, the Lights, the Neutrals, all seem insignificant.
And that was the joy of being a Dark, he supposed. However strong his anger was towards the Lights, there was always some other emotion, stronger still, to wash over and completely smother that.
"We shouldn't worry about them. Sooner or later, their herds will fail here as they must have before, and we'll no longer have to deal with them." Lacrymosa was sure of it. Positive. The Darks lived the way any natural horse herd did; the way the others lived...it was as if they'd been raised captive. Despite never having seen the humans, other than a brief glance in his young days as a foal, he had no idea what they may be like. But their horses...they could not live the way a normal horse did. Wild, free, not coldhearted and emotionless.

Bella's smile grew. Her thoughts of the war were washed away with the out-going tide of the ocean. Her broad shoulder brushed his, and her ears turned towards Lacrymosa. The mare swished her tail against his hindquarters, and her muzzle rubbed gently against his cheek and neck.
If only the other herds lived this way. Full of many emotions and thoughts. Then there wouldn't be all these problems. Once more her anger flared deep inside her, but she forced herself to push it down and consentrate on her Lord. Her Guardian and...her Lover. Bella closed her eyes in thought, calming herself as she thought of Lacrymosa.
Oh, life could be so sweet.

This was why he fought.
Moments like these, when all thoughts of the war were out of his mind, and he lost himself in the beauty of his Lady. Simple moments, peaceful moments, like these.
The memory of these drove him to attack, furious that the peace should ever need to be disturbed.
But if it had to be disturbed eventually, he would make the most of it now.
With a soft, throaty nicker, one of the ones he reserved for the peaceful moments like these, he nuzzled her, letting his muzzle linger on her mane for a moment.

Bella let out a gentle nicker and lightly nipped her lord's mane. Playfullness took over. Just wait, the herd would grow. And when it was to its fullest, they could attack and soon restore the peace amongst the lands.
Her ears flickered to catch the sounds of the spraying ocean and the sound of the wind whistling over the water. Her gaze locked with her lords'. Brown eyes stared into his, and she nipped his mane once more. Bella's hooves danced, ready to trot off in a game with her stallion.
If only every waking moment could be this way.
But, alas, Bella knew this was not possible. There had to be serious times, and times with the herd and such.
But a mare could dream, couldn't she?

Lacrymosa squealed, the high-pitched sound echoing a little over the sand. He gently nipped the mare's neck, moving out a little deeper into the water and striking it once in a mock-challenge.
For a moment he stayed there, knee-high in the cold surf, until a wave came. It splashed onto the stallion's hindquarters, and he squealed again, this time in surprise, jumping forward.
He dodged to the side, swerving around Bella, then nipping at her hindquarters.
Playfulness--what a strange thing to be seen in the Lord of the Darks!
Or maybe not so strange. After all, the Darks were supposed to be the way a "natural" horse lived, right?
His thoughts of the upcoming war and violence were forgotten for the moment.

Bella reared with mock-defiance, hooves slashing through the air as she let out a scream. Sand splattered as she crashed to the ground. She trotted closer to Lacrymosa and nipped his neck and side. Her hooves danced to an invisible beat. The mare tossed her mane, her eyes gleaming with playfullness, though her facial expression showed mock-anger.
Bella cantered into the water and slowed when it was chest-deep. She turned around quickly to face the stallion and stamped a hoof, her shoulder splashing up small droplets of water. Her coat darkened to a deep brown from the salt water. She tossed her mane again and flicked her tail.
Oh, how wonderful this was. Once more wishes of everyday being like this slid through her mind. Bella brushed them aside with another swish of her tail, prancing not-so-gracefully in the deep water.

Lacrymosa snorted, charging out into the water as if he were going to battle. Going to battle. Not a pleasant thought, nor one he particularly wanted to be having this moment. He brushed it off.
Water sprayed in all directions, shooting away from his large, fast-moving body. Dark already, his black coat could only turn blacker as every inch of him was soaked. His mane clung to his neck, only moving away when he shook his head violently, creating another, albeit smaller, fountain of salt water.
His eyes were stinging, but he ignored it as he first tried to buck, the movement seeming ridiculous in the deep water, where he could hardly raise his back legs. Then he attempted a rearing, succeeding at coming halfway out of the ocean before going back down. Not much water sprayed out at that; he was already mostly submerged.
Then he turned to smirk at the mare, his Lady. "Come, now, you don't think that the deeper water can make you beat me, do you?" The words, had they been said to another stallion, would have been harsh and mocking. Here, in this context, they were gently teasing, a spark of playfulness shining in his eyes, though his every other movement showed challenge.

Bella grinned, then dropped the facial expression. Her face deepend to seem angry, though playfullness flames her brown eyes. The mare charged toward her Lord, though she more had to leap, teeth bared as if preparing to bite harshly onto his nose. As she neared him she swerved to the side, though stumbling slightly through the deep water.
Battle. The thought cut her like a knife. Her gaze showed it for one moment, until she thought about the good times she had shared with her Lord. The sun-filled days of galloping across open land, no other herd to challenge them. That was what she wanted back. Those beautiful and unforgetable days. Bella moved towards more shallow water and turned to face Lacrymosa.
She bucked, her hind hooves flaring for a moment in mid-air before coming crashing down and kicking up large sprays of water. "I think I can beat you no matter where we are," she replied. Though her tone was not biting and bitter. It was gently teasing and coated in sweetness and playfullness.

When Bella lunged at him, the stallion jumped back a little, staying for a moment on his two hind legs. He landed with a splash back into the water, snorting a little and flipping his mane, the wet forelock hanging irritatingly in his eyes.
Those eyes turned concerned for a moment when Bella's expression changed, and he took a step forward, his movements slow and heavy in the water. He was almost by her side when her expression changed again, and she bucked.
A startled snort, another leap backwards. Perhaps his Lady was a better fighter than Lacrymosa gave her credit for. She was certainly catching him off guard quite a bit.
"You know, I'm starting to believe you," he said, his face showing pure joy at their games. "But maybe, do you think, you've underestimated me, as I have done to you?" With that, he lunged forward, reaching out to gently nip her neck before darting back again. Or, at least, trying to. Instead, he stumbled and went under the water for a moment, then came sputtering to the surface. He let out a long breath, a little irritated at his own clumsiness.

Bella was about to leap back, but then she saw him stumble. She moved forward through the water and nudged her Lord's neck gently. Her gaze was caring and understanding, soft and kind.
"Are you okay?" her voice was coated with sweetness, and underneath, concern for him. Bella's soft, dark coloured muzzle breathed into his, taking in his sweet scent. She closed her eyes for a moment in thought, then reopened them. The mare gazed into Lacrymosa's gentle eyes, smiling. She lipped his muzzle to calm him, as if to say that it was okay to fall sometimes.
Bella couldn't take her gaze away from her Lord's. She felt as though if she did, she would fall through an unwanted darkness. The mare knew, of course, that wouldn't happen, but she wouldn't say anything about it...

Lacrymosa nipped Bella's mane gently, not breaking the eye contact.
"I'm all right," he muttered softly, unwilling somehow to speak any louder. Certain that if he did, something would happen--something would break--something would shatter. And he wouldn't like it.
"I just stumbled--no harm done. If it had been on land, we probably both would have laughed."
He was still quiet, and an image came to him. Something fragile, clear, thin--glass, maybe, or ice. It was something beautiful, something closing them off from the worries and cares of the outside world, and if he spoke too loudly--moved too suddenly--it would shatter.
He couldn't let it shatter. Not now.
